Why do we need a new hospice?
The current hospice was built more than 30 years ago, its ageing facilities do not reach our own high standards or those required by law.
It's limitations are affecting our patients's comfort, their privacy and the standards of care they receive.
Facilities are limited. There are no en-suite bathrooms, toilets are located well away from rooms, there are only 12 single rooms in the hospice and not enough accommodation for visiting families.
"Our services have outgrown the building and the growing pains are getting worse. We would like to work in a building for the 21st Century."
Christine Kelly, Housekeeper, Glasgow Hospice
The building's infrastructure is failing. The heating, windows and hot water tanks all need to be replaced. It also lacks piped oxygen, which is standard in all modern healthcare facilities.
Maintenance costs for this old building are continually rising. We have looked into refurbishment, but the layout limits expansion and the cost of all the necessary improvements is prohibitively expensive.
On top of this, we would need to move patients for at least 18 months, if not suspend services altogether.
This is why a new hospice is the only answer.
